To mark the 30th anniversary of the wrapping of the Berlin Reichstag, lighting designer Andreas Boehlke is commemorating the summer of 1995 with a light installation that will run until June 20, 2025. The artist couple Christo (1935-2020) and Jeanne-Claude (1935-2009) had wrapped the Reichstag in Berlin with an aluminum-coated, silvery shimmering polypropylene fabric. During the two weeks from June 24 to July 7, 1995, something was felt around the Reichstag building that was dubbed a "summer fairytale" after the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. I remember it well.
I have lived in Berlin since 1996. But the visit of my good friend Kordula Rüter, who, as a young photographer, was completely captivated by the special atmosphere while resting in front of the Reichstag, certainly influenced my move to Berlin in the spring of 1996.
At the time, there was no sign of my later Parkinson's disease. Michael J. Fox, on the other hand, was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 1991 at the age of 29. The US actor didn't make his illness public until a few years later. Now 64, and after a brave, over 30-year battle with Parkinson's disease, Michael J. Fox is both a role model and a source of encouragement, not only for me.
